The Japanese government implemented the “Project for the Promotion of Gender Equality in Sports” for ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries that promote cooperation in the field of sports. The Japanese Center for Research on Women in Sport, which was entrusted with this project in 2021 and 2022, as the implementing agency, was responsible for project management and operation in cooperation with the ASEAN Secretariat.

ASEAN-JAPAN Workshop on Promoting Gender Equality in Sports
The ”ASEAN-JAPAN Workshop on Promoting Gender Equality in Sports”, a workshop held during the period of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2021, was attended by policy makers and young future women leaders of each country from the 10 ASEAN countries online (70 participants in total) .
Cross-national discussions and incorporating the opinions of young women into policies, each country developed a “policy-level action plan for increasing women’s sports participation”

ASEAN-Japan Actions on Sports: Gender Equality
We commissioned the Government-commissioned project (Japan Sports Agency / Japan Sport Council) Sport for Tomorrow; Gender equality through sports project, and at the group presentation at the 8th IWG World Conference on Women and Sport, presented the gender equality efforts of Japan-ASEAN to the world. In addition, two workshops were held in Thailand to follow up on the national action plans that emerged from the 2021 workshop to promote understanding of international gender equality in sports.
